ETHAN NADELMANN
Described
by Rolling Stone as, "the point man for drug-policy-refonn
efforts", Ethan Nadelmann is one of the world's most respected
and high profile critics and commentators on U.S. and international
drug control policies. Nadelmann, bornMarch 13, 1957 in New York
City, was educated at McGill University, Harvard University, and
the London School of Economics. He received his B.A., J.D., and
Ph.D. in Political Science from Harvard as well as a Masters degree
in International Relations from the London School of Economics.
From 1987 to 1994 he served as an assistent professor of politics
and public affairs at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International
Affairs at Princeton University. At Princeton, Nadelmann created
and chaired the Princeton Working Group on the Future of Drug Use
and Altematives to Drug Prohibition.
Nadelmann
founded The Lindesmith Center a leading drug policy and research
institute created in 1994 with the philanthropic support of George
Soros. He now serves as the Executive Director of The Lindesmith
Center-Drug Policy Foundation which merged in July of 2000.
Nadelmann's
writings on drug policy have appeared in numerous scholarly and
mainstream joumals and publications such as Science, Rolling Stone,
National Review, Foreign Policy, Foreign Affairs, The Public Interest,
Daedalus, American Heritage, and other leading publications. Nadelmann
is author of the book, Cops Across Borders: The Intemationalization
of U.S. Criminal Law Enforcement (1993), and a highly regarded expert
on the international aspects of crime and law enforcement. He also
co-edited the book, Psychoactive Drugs & Harm Reduction: From
Faith to Science (1993).
His
critiques of U.S. drug control policies and recommendations regarding
harm reduction strategies and other altematives to punitive drug
prohibition have attracted international attention and played a
decisive role in stimulating the growing debate over drug policy
worldwide. He has spoken directly to diverse audienees throughout
the world and appeared on scores of radio and TV programs, including
ABC's Nightline, a Ted Koppel Special Report, NBC's Today Show,
NBC Nightly News, CBS's 48 Hours, CBS Moming News, Larry King Live,
CNN Headline News, CNN Crossfire, the Charlie Rose Show, William
F. Buckley's Firing Line, and MacNeil/Lehrer Newshour.
